Military Service Document, Makronissos
Military Service Sheet issued in lack of a Military Service and Pay - Book. It refers to the service of a fisherman, resident of the village of Kyprinos, in the Prefecture of Evros. The man was drafted to serve in the 82nd National Guard Battalion, which saw action in operations in the region. Consisting of older reservists, the National Guard Battalions had the duty of guarding crucial locations and securing the areas of operations, granting mobility to the "regular" battalions of the governmental army. Given his age, it must had been the man's third call to arms.
The soldier was later transferred to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion (3rd Special Private Battalion - Γ' Ε.Τ.Ο.), stationed in Makronissos. The 3rd Battalion was named "Blue", referring to the high rate of imprisoned soldiers signing a written denunciation of Communism, after which they were considered for service in regular units, having been "cleansed". The "success" of the Battalion was based on a combination of the harsh weather conditions of the island and psychological and physical torture.
Private Kaloudis remained in Makronissos until January 10, 1949. At that time, he was 40 years old.
