III./229 Jäger Rgt. letter
Letter to Mrs. Liesel Hahn, from Remscheid, dated February 18, 1944, stating:
"The service is sending you enclosed the wound badge in black, awarded to your husband by the commander of III./229."
Tracking the Feldpostnummer 02124 D, Mrs. Hahn's husband served in the 13. Kompanie (Infanteriegeschütz / Infantry support gun company) of the III./229 Jäger Regiment, in the Eastern Front. According to the info provided by www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de, the 229 Jäger Regiment:
"was in the beginning of January 1944 stationed in the area of Winniza (retaining the German spelling in the translation). Here it gave heavy attack and defensive battles near Komarow, Woronowzy, Latanzy, Potoki, Schenderiwka and Rotmistriwka. The battles in the area of Winniza lasted till March 1944. In the end, it gave retreating and pocket battles under the command of the 1. Panzerarmee near Winniza, Brailoff, Bar, Nowaja-Uschiza, Kamenez-Podolsk and Uszieocko."
It is possible that the man was wounded during these battles and was forwarded to a field hospital, the location of which was at the time unknown to the unit, and therefore the Wound Badge was sent to the next of kin. If the man survived the war, it is probably impossible to find any more information for the time being.
Unfortunately, no first name is mentioned in the letter and given the fact that Hahn is quite a common German name, trying to further research a possible date and place of death for the timeframe of early 1944 in the geographical area of Winniza via the available databases, several results turned up, which, in the best case, can be limited to four individuals.
